Stipa gigantea is, as it's name suggests, the biggest of the Stipa grasses. It's beautiful bright green foliage forms an eventual large neat clump above which rises very long slender stems and an abundance of golden oat-flowers. It is these flowers which are the striking feature; they are simply gorgeous. In the sun they appear translucent and luminescent. They are a fantastic focal point, elegant and majestic without appearing dense, they add real height and drama to any garden. The flowers will last well into the winter. In the Spring, simply cut the Stipa down to the ground. Stipa gigantea loves a sunny well drained site. Give it some room so it can show off its lovely form and grow happily.
The Giant Oat Grass is also lovely grown as a specimen plant, but if you have room try growing several to line a path or border - it looks stunning! The flower spikes can get as tall as 2-2.5M.
