Canna 'Pretoria' is sometimes also referred to as C. 'Striata', 'Bengal Tiger' or 'Palida'. This is an exceptional canna with the most striking striped yellow and green foliage and large bright orange-yellow flowers which contrast beautifully. Canna will naturally start flowering from July until the first frosts. Generally canna grow best in full sun in a location sheltered from wind, 'Pretoria', however will take a little shade during the day and often the leaves will look even brighter and larger when situated in a partly shaded spot.
Canna are suitable for a container or for growing directly in the ground. Feed well for optimum growth during the growing season. They prefer a rich, well drained soil, if you want to overwinter in the ground - mulch heavily in autumn to protect from winter frost. An excellent tip is to place an upturned pot over the crown for the winter, this helps keep the area dry and acts like a cloche. Alternatively, lift the rhizome and store in a frost-free and dry environment.
