Trim down old growth in Spring.
Sun or part-shade.
Well drained moist soil
A beautiful low growing ornamental grass from the slopes of Mount Hakone in Japan. Hakonechloa 'Aureola' has vivid acid green foliage which lasts all summer. It adds a textural quality to planting schemes and looks amazing when planted en masse. Tom Stuart Smith once planted an amazing scheme in a London garden where he used Hakonechloa, tree ferns and box spheres to great effect, the difference in shapes and textures just from 3 different plant forms was breathtaking.
Hakonechloa looks best in a dappled shady garden where it's colour shines but will grow very well in sun.
Hakonechloa has been awarded AGM
