Musa basjoo AGM

The Musa bajoo is a great ornamental banana plant to grow in the UK, fast growing and very architectural. It can produce little bananas but they are inedible. Like all banana plants, this Musa loves a good fertile, rich soil with plenty of nutrient and water to get the maximum growth in the summer. They can also be grown in large pots, just gradually pot up to the next size pot each year. In colder areas its best to put a thick mulch around the base to protect the roots, the trunk can also be given some winter protection with a horticultural fleece but in milder areas they can be left uncovered. Its the roots which are hardy, frost will brown off the leaves and stem but come the following Spring/Summer there will be lots of new shoots from the base.

Musa basjoo is a very worthy plant to grow and looks fabulous in the 'tropical' border. Plant in full sun to partial shade.
